How to disable the update automatic links at open option in Word 2010 ?
When you open the Word 2010 document , sometimes you may have noticed that it takes some time to load the links contained in the document .
When you look in to the default settings for Word 2010 , the option of updating the link at open is enabled .
You can disable this option to shorten the time for launching the word document .
To disable this option , Click File -> Options
In the Word Options Dialog Window , go to the Advanced tab and to the group “General” and uncheck the option “Update automatic links at open ” .

How to do so with Word 2007?!
Oh I found out for Word 2007: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918793
simply it doesn’t work.
I have the option unchecked.
I open a file word 2010 with several excel charts linked. at the very start word opens the excel files ONE TIME FOR EACH CHART even if the file is the same for all the charts. So the excel file is quite big and the time to start word is long enough to dead. AFTER all these boring load operations word asks with some incredible humor “do you want to update the links?”. ah if the excel file has some link or is locked by another user you must be there to respond repeatedly to “do you want to update the links” or “do you want to open it as a read-only file?” even if the excel file is allways the same.
HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO AVOID ALL THIS HUGE AMOUNT OF TROUBLE THAT MAKES ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO WORK WITH THE SUITE? (WITH OFFICE 2003 EVERITHINK WAS WORKING FINE)
Hi,
as far as i can see the only good working option is to stay in 2003 file format – i.e. you can use Word 2007/10/13 – but you must save all your files in 2003 format (doc). Bad – but it’s the only solution so far for me.
